Healing-Centred Design®

Healing-Centred Design® is an evidence-based transformation framework that builds on the foundations of trauma-informed practice. It strengthens the capacity of people, organisations and systems to create lasting change.

Lasting transformation isn’t created by external experts solving problems for people. It happens when people, organisations and systems develop the capacity to keep learning, adapting and improving long after a project has ended.

Healing-Centred Design® blends trauma-informed practice, systems thinking and creative coaching. The framework conditions for safe participation and collaboration, helps people understand patterns, relationships and root causes, and enables people to design, develop and implement meaningful change. This builds the capacity of people, organisations and systems to create lasting change.

Work is often designed for urgency, not real life. The result is pressure, conflict and overload that drains people, reduces capacity and limits performance. Healing-Centred Design® helps people move from pain to power, refocus on what matters, prioritise wellbeing and design sustainable impact.

‘Healing-Centred’ guides safe, supported collaboration using Human Skills such as compassion, creativity and adaptability.

‘Design’ creates sustainable, productive solutions instead of defaulting to urgent quick fixes.

Using the Healing-Centred Design Framework

A structured journey to create real change

Because transformation doesn’t happen in a single workshop or conversation, Healing-Centred Design® provides a structured process that helps people move from understanding challenges to embedding practical change.

Healing-Centred Design® moves through six stages, each providing an opportunity to explore change through a different lens, and reshape time, tasks, people, power and value.  This creates depth, coherence and structured progression.

  • Frame (to Dance Within). Co-create a container for our work together, developing a safe and inspiring space to connect and collaborate with clear parameters.
  • Pain to Power. Connect experiences, needs and indicators of success. Understand individual, group and systemic challenges and identify collective strengths.
  • Mend + Tend. Identify what needs to be repaired or changed, and what needs to be nurtured or supported.
  • Principles, Practices + Processes. Create practical ways of working that strengthen regulation and safety, decision-making, innovation, reflection, equity and sustainability.
  • Micro-Missions. Design solutions, test them, learn through Action Learning Sets, Sensemaking and Reflective Practice.
  • Assets that Influence Co-produce practical tools and resources that help teams implement, embed and sustain positive change.

Together these stages build individual, organisational and system capacity, so people develop the confidence, relationships and practical resources to continue creating change beyond the life of a project.

Tranformation design in practice

Healing-Centred Design® adapts to different contexts, projects and circumstances.

For people, it strengthens individual capacity through confidence, Human Skills and leadership capability, enabling people to lead meaningful change.

For organisations, it strengthens organisational capacity through healthier ways of working, leadership development and stronger collaboration, helping teams adapt and improve over time.

For places, it strengthens system capacity by bringing together communities, partnerships and organisations around shared challenges, enabling lasting social change through collective action.

Healing-Centred Design® Principles that shape our work

Everything we do is guided by five Healing-Centred Design® principles. Together these principles create the conditions for learning, adaptation and continuous improvement, which builds the capacity of people, organisations and systems to keep creating positive change.

The five principles translate the complementary strengths of trauma-informed practice, systems thinking and creative coaching into practical ways of working that people can apply every day.

From systemic symptoms to designing healing-centred solutions

Instead of only treating symptoms, this multidisciplinary approach helps people understand the patterns that create root causes and limit change, and intentionally redesign them. It strengthens the capacity of people, teams and organisations to respond to challenges, adapt to change and create safer, healthier ways of working.

Healing-Centred Design® is a way of strengthening the capacity of people, organisations and systems by redesigning how work, organisations and communities function.

Because sustainable transformation isn’t measured by what happens during a project; it’s measured by what people are able to continue creating afterwards.

What are Human Skills?

Human Skills are the everyday behaviours we encourage through our work, that help people work well together through change. Skills like compassion, trust-building, conflict navigation, adaptability and critical thinking help teams communicate, collaborate and thrive under pressure.

What is Healing-Centred Design®?

Healing-Centred Design® is our approach to creating positive change, that blends trauma-informed practice, systems thinking and creative coaching. Rather than just solving problems, it helps people, teams and communities design ways of working that build wellbeing, strengthen relationships and create lasting change.

What is Systems Change work?

Systems change is the collaborative work of identifying the patterns, relationships and structures that shape everyday experiences. It helps uncover the root causes of challenges and redesign how systems, services and communities work together to achieve better outcomes for people.

By bringing together the people who use, deliver and influence services, through meaningful consultation and research, codesign and coproduction, systems change work creates more effective, sustainable solutions that improve wellbeing, reduce inequalities and strengthen communities.
